Charlie Kake-White

Cloud and Software Engineer

I'm based in Auckland, New Zealand, and I help turn complex ideas into simple, scalable systems. My background is in software, but these days I focus on building cloud infrastructure, automating workflows, and making sure the tech just works so the people using it don’t need to think twice. I’ve never liked the idea of explaining who I am through a PDF, so I built this site instead. Just a clean space to share what I’ve worked on and what I care about. One day I hope to build and grow my own software business. Something that makes a real impact in my community, my country, and maybe even further than that.

Work Experience

Datacom

Cloud Engineer

May 2025 — Present

Modernisation Project

  • Helped modernise an outdated university system by rebuilding it as a scalable, cloud-based application.
  • Took an old legacy app and packaged it into a container, making it much easier to run and manage in the cloud.
  • Set up automation pipelines so every new change to the app could be tested and deployed quickly with minimal manual work.
  • The project became a blueprint for future work across the university, giving them a clear example of what cloud transformation could look like.
  • One of my favourite projects. It was hands-on, packed with learning, and a great chance to work with smart people solving real problems.

Graduate Cloud Engineer

Feb 2024 — May 2025

Migrations Project

  • Helped move important systems from old in-house servers to Microsoft Azure for a major NZ education provider.
  • Built secure cloud environments from the ground up using modern tools like Terraform and reusable infrastructure templates.
  • Automated the rollout of infrastructure so new environments could be spun up reliably and efficiently.
  • Introduced a secure gateway for internet traffic — a test setup that worked so well it became the new standard across the project.
  • The project won the 2024 Reseller Innovation Award for its impact on modernising how education institutions use the cloud.

Internship

Nov 2023 — Feb 2024

My project for the internship was just learning anything and everything about major cloud providers

  • Started using Azure and Terraform to provision cloud infrastructure. Started really basic, but I was able to build a simple web app and deploy it to Azure using Terraform. I also learned about Azure DevOps and how to use it to manage projects and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Was introduced to some great mentors and people at the company, and was introduced to Azure Verified Modules. I was able to build a couple modules that were published to the public registry for use by the community.

MYOB

Internship

Nov 2022 — Feb 2023

Again, no major projects, just doing what an intern does

  • Completed a 3-week technical accelerator program, learning about core software engineering principles (OOP, TDD, and agile methodologies).
  • Shippped an internal dashboard allowing managers to track the career progression of their team members. Built with Typescript, React Native.
  • Took part in MYOB's annual hackathon and won first place with the other interns!

About Me

Hi, I'm Charlie - a Cloud Engineer with a software background and a focus on building secure, scalable infrastructure using tools like Azure, Kubernetes, and Terraform. I want to be the kind of engineer who can move between technical and non-technical worlds - someone who can build systems and also explain them clearly. One day, I'd love to build and scale a product of my own from the ground up. This site is just a more enjoyable way to share my work and expereriences than a plain PDF resume.
